UTI Fighting Smoothie

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are very common. Up to 60% of women will experience a UTI in their lifetime and 4 out of 10 will get reinfected within 6 months.

Each ingredient in this smoothie is carefully selected for their well-known UTI blocking properties.

Cranberries contain special compounds called A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs) that helps prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall. When combined with cherries, a double whammy is created to promote both urinary tract and bladder health.

During an infection, drink this smoothie daily. One to two times per week is a great maintenance program for urinary tract and bladder health.

Top tips to treat and prevent UTIs from recurring:

  1. Eat a healthy, whole-food diet rich in fruit and vegetables. In particular, lots of greens (kale, spinach, broccoli are great).
  2. Avoid bladder-irritating foods and drinks. These include coffee, tea, alcohol, carbonated drinks, spicy foods, chocolate, artificial sweeteners, refined sugar, refined flours, processed, and deep-fried foods.
  3. Increase prebiotic foods which feed beneficial bacteria in the gut (which supports the immune system): onions, garlic, leeks, chicory, Jerusalem artichokes, asparagus, apples, and bananas.
  4. Herbs like Uva-ursi and Echinacea are helpful thanks to their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  5. Drink plenty of water to flush out a urinary tract infection. Green tea is also helpful.
  6. A note on antibiotics: antibiotics come with a number of adverse side effects like yeast infections, digestive issues, and antibiotic resistance. Plus, they make you more susceptible to future reinfections.
