This mighty spread is a healthy and delicious alternative to the Australian favourite, ‘vegemite’.
Sadly, vegemite is not the health food product it is marketed to be. It is instead highly processed containing very high levels of sodium, msg, and preservatives. While the label shares all the amazing vitamins it contains, they are unfortunately synthetic, making them impossible to absorb.
Read more about vegemite here.
Instead of store-bought vegemite, make your own with this easy alternative which tastes delicious. It’s just 4 ingredients and takes all of 5 minutes. Plus, it will be adding real nutrients into the diet that do get absorbed.
These ingredients can now often be found in your local supermarket and if not, your health food store or easily online.
The star ingredient is tahini. A great source of copper, a trace mineral essential for iron absorption, blood clot formation, and blood pressure. It’s also rich in selenium, a mineral that helps decrease inflammation and promotes immune health, as well as phosphorus, which is involved in maintaining bone health.
Top tip:
Our kids are smart and creatures of comfort. Instead of throwing out the next jar of vegemite, clean it out and use that as your container with your own homemade version. If you have particularly fussy eaters, mix vegemite with a small portion of mighty spread. Over time, decrease the vegemite to a point you don’t need it anymore.
