Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie

Every morning, my husband, our boys (Jake ,7 and Coops, 4) and I will have celery juice followed by this tasty smoothie.

We’ve been doing this morning routine for months now and can see the impact it has on our all of our health and well being – increased energy, positive moods, improved digestion, strong immune systems and reduced unhealthy cravings.

The recipe was developed by #1 NY Times Best Selling Author Anthony William (aka Medical Medium) to purposely draw out heavy metals from the body to improve health and wellbeing.  It’s also where this information has come from.

In this article you’ll learn the 5 key ingredients that combined, are very effective to draw out heavy metals like mercury, lead, aluminium, nickel, copper, and cadmium out of your organs where they accumulate. You’ll also find out where to buy the ingredients and how to make it

First however…

Most of us are carrying around heavy metals that have been with us most of our lives and which have burrowed deep inside our tissues. Toxic heavy metals are virtually everywhere, and are present in all kinds of things that we come in contact with every day, such as aluminium cans and foil, batteries, metal cookware, old paint, as well as pesticides and herbicides.

These toxic heavy metals inflame and irritate our central nervous system (especially our brain). This can trigger conditions in children such as  ADHD, ADD, ODD, autism, anxiety as well as memory loss, brain fog, fatigue, and depression in adults.

These metals create inflammation in virtually every system and organ  and release poisons into the gut as well. Add further insult to injury, heavy metals are a source of food for viruses, bacteria, parasites, and other pathogens in the body.

As it’s impossible to avoid toxic heavy metals, it’s so important to minimise exposure where possible and REMOVE them from our body with the right foods.  Fortunately with this recipe it’s pretty easy to do!

When we add the following five key foods to the daily diet you will go a long way toward ridding your body of these heavy metals, plus increase an enormous amount of nutrients.  This smoothie is by far the easiest way to consume these foods daily and in a way children will enjoy.

So get your blender out!

You can buy these ingredients online and in health food stores, however I’ve added a link to each of these ingredients and where you can buy in Australia, UK and US.

This algae draws out heavy metals from the brain, central nervous system, and liver, and soaks up the heavy metals extracted by barley grass juice extract powder.

Where to buy:
AU – iherb
US – Vimergy
UK – Golden Greens

Barley Grass Juice Powder:
This nutrient dense grass prepares heavy metals for complete absorption by spirulina (see above). It draws out heavy metals from the spleen, intestinal tract, pancreas, thyroid, and reproductive system.

Where to buy:
AU – iherb
US – Vimergy
UK – Amazon

This fresh herb goes deep into hard-to-reach places, extracting metals from that have been in the body for years and the toxins inherited from previous generations.  Aside from this smoothie add it in guacamole and salads for increased exposure.

Where to buy:
Easy one! Local supermarket, farmers market or organic store.

Wild Blueberries
These are different to organic blueberries. And while organic blueberries are very nutritious they lack the ability the ability to draw out these metals. So it’s worth trying to find for this recipe. You can also use wild blueberry powder if you cant get frozen and the links to buy are below.  It is said that wild blueberries are so powerful they can they can halt or even in reverse conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia. The potent antioxidants in wild blueberries help reverse any oxidative damage left behind by the heavy metal removal.

Where to buy:
AU – Harris Farm stock the Vikings brand in their freezer section or buy online. All About Organics deliver the Viking brand
US – Vimergy
UK – Amazon

Atlantic Dulse Flakes
Atlantic dulse is so nutrient dense. Up to 20 times that of land vegetables.  Furthermore its great at going deep into hidden places of the digestive tract and gut, seeking out mercury, binding to it, and releasing it only when it leaves the body.

Where to buy:
AU – Nourished Life
US – Amazon
UK – Amazon

Please note:
These online retailers are just suggestions to save you time.  I’m not an affiliate for any of these suppliers. And it may be worthwhile to do your own research to find the best value.

And now for the recipe…

Thank you so much for sharing this! I’m a huge Anthony Williams fan and love this smoothie too! I’m curious to know if you divide this up between your family or if you make one for everyone? Thank you so so much for all that you share and for inspiring so many!

    • Sharon Selby on August 5, 2019 at 11:10 am

Gosh Kendall you are so sweet and I have loved having you in the community. Id say this covers a family of 4 (2 tall glasses and 2 small glasses), however I tend to add two teaspoons of the barley grass powder, dulse flakes, spirulina and if Im using wild blueberry powder. I also change up the fruit all the time and sneak in a handful of green leaves. Hope this helps hon. Sharon xx

Can you freeze these smoothies overnight? or do they have to be prepped the day of to be the most effective?

        • Sharon Selby on November 5, 2019 at 9:52 pm

Ideally prep the day you’re consuming but if thats too difficult the next day will still have a ton of benefits. xx

  2. Sarah on July 31, 2019 at 12:30 pm

Yes and how do You know it’s actually working? Have you done blood tests to see if the copper or mercury etc has gone down ?? Those are testimonies I have been waiting to see on MM Instagram but have never seen one.

    • Sharon Selby on August 5, 2019 at 11:58 am

Hi Sarah, such a valid and great question. Ive had these tests done before with my integrative doctor and very clearly needed to reduce my copper levels which you can do and spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars in the process on tests and supplements. Which I’d advocate to do if there is budget. However the reason I feel this recipe together with celery juice in the morning has been the BEST outcome for my family is just witnessing the health results. My husband finally healing from eczema and psoriasis after 5 years, my asthma as well as my son’s asthma has improved greatly where we are now almost stopping using our daily preventers. Thats big after years of reliance. As well as overall feeling of health since we started this morning protocol. Much more energy, better sleep, increased positivity and great regularity (scary in a household of three boys – LOL). I could definitely go now and test to double check the markers but I feel so confident that we are so on the right track as we are witnessing our own healing and feeling better in the process. In my opinion this is just as valid as a test. Previously tests would show improvements in lowering copper etc but the health issues remained. For that reason Im comfortable to not test further. Hope Ive helped but each to their own to have confidence in their journey. I believe we should try everything that makes sense. Sharon xx

  3. Chantelle on July 31, 2019 at 12:41 pm

Thank you so much for sharing this! I’m going to make this a regular in our household. Quick question; how many serves does this recipe offer?

    • Sharon Selby on August 5, 2019 at 11:05 am

Im so pleased Chantelle. Id say this serves two adult portions and two small portions for kids. I tend to add two teaspoons of the powders as we are sharing amongst the four of us. With the coriander I just grab a small handful. I tend to buy two bunches of coriander. Give them a good wash and stock in the freezer stems and all in a container so I can add it quickly in the mornings. I also vary up the fruit all the time and often add in some spinach or kale as it will be the only opportunity to get the boys to eat green leaves daily. So for this morning we had pineapple, kiwis and kale with the 5 detox ingredients. Hope this helps. Sharon xx

  4. Diane on May 16, 2020 at 5:56 am

I tired to make the smoothie for my grandson because he is autistic. He is four turning five in the summer. He says a few words but understand enough to start kindergarten with support. I am sure this recipe would help him but he does not like the taste. He might like it frozen as an ice pop…might be more appealing. Would this work? He has allergies to gluten, eggs, almonds, and milk

    • Sharon Selby on May 17, 2020 at 1:01 pm

Hi Diane. I love your beautiful intentions, however always recommend to start very slowly. Have your son first enjoy delicious smoothies and get in a routine for doing this at every breakfast. Simply start with ingredients you know he will enjoy (ie just frozen fruit, like banana and mango), then slowly had small quantities, say coriander first (as you cant taste it), then a tiny sprinkle of the powders. Sprulina tastes very strong so maybe just start with barley grass juice powder. Hope this helps. xx

    • Sharon Selby on May 17, 2020 at 1:02 pm

You can definitely enjoy these as frozen, but again make them pleasing to his palette to start. xx

  5. Duyen DO on July 2, 2021 at 10:20 am

Hi Sharon, my mom (Asian, 56) drank this, but later, she feel tired, got rash + swelling all body, really itchy. After 8-10hours, she become normal. 4-5 days later, she still got a little tired.
I dont know the reason she got allgery with the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothis or she got too much poison in her body (she got Parkinson for 5 years) & this is just a normal phenomena will pass if the body get used to the Smoothies.
Do u ever heard someone got the same symptom with my mom? Plz help me. Thank you so much!

    • Sharon Selby on September 3, 2021 at 10:41 am

Hi Duyen, that’s quite a reaction and I would suggesting enquiring why that happened with her practitioner. It could be expelling toxins from the body (although this is quite a gentle cleanse) or a reaction to some of the foods…so a food sensitivity. Has your mum tried it again since? Sharon xx

  6. Tina on September 2, 2021 at 10:39 am

Hey, Can you drink this while pregnant?

    • Sharon Selby on September 22, 2021 at 4:39 pm

      Congrats on your pregnancy.

  8. Liana on September 7, 2021 at 10:36 am

Hi Sharon. Do we must drink celery juice first before HMDS ? Thanks

    • Sharon Selby on September 9, 2021 at 8:39 am

      Hi Liana

You dont have to. They are two separate strategies and they can be done independently. However you can as well. Medical Medium advice celery juice first and then the HMD smoothie. Depends how much you want to do. xx

    • Sharon Selby on September 22, 2021 at 4:38 pm

      Hi Liana
      Yes for best results.
      Sharon xx

  9. Brigitta on October 9, 2021 at 2:32 am

Do anyone know how long we should drink this smoothie? Is it 1 week, 2 weeks, months?
    Thank you.

    • Sharon Selby on October 11, 2021 at 8:14 pm

      Hi Brigitta
You can drink it as often as you like. Ive been having some version of it (I change up the fruit and dont always have the superfoods) for years. If you enjoy it keep going.
      Sharon xx

  10. Lew on May 22, 2022 at 7:07 pm

Hi, I’ve just started using this but really it’s only for me to drink. Would you say to just half of everything in the recipe above? I did my first one this morning and even though I didn’t have all ingridents to hand I just had the bananas (used 1) and had blueberry powder, barley grass powder and spirulina powder and just added water. Will try pick up few others things this week but like I say it will only be myself drinking. Sadly I’ve had issues from an mri / contrast so been recommended this

  11. Rebecca on September 7, 2022 at 6:23 am

Do kids age 7 have the same amount or a smaller version?

    • Sharon Selby on September 7, 2022 at 8:03 am

Probably smaller otherwise it’s a lot. Especially if you are starting out. You can build up gradually. My son is 7 and has an adult serving. Key is to make it enjoyable and not stressful. Otherwise there is no longevity or consistency xx

  12. Yalond on March 23, 2023 at 10:15 pm

Can I add dragonfruit powder to the HMD smoothie? It would be kind of a combo of the Liver Rescue and HMD smoothies. Just wondering if that would be ok?

    • Sharon Selby on July 31, 2023 at 11:47 am

Hi. Yes you can of course. I often change the fruit around and add green leaves. The variety is good too.

  13. Yeidy on August 25, 2023 at 10:42 pm

I have the book, I just started 3 days ago, but is quite expensive. The recipe is for just one person or can be divided in two?

    • Bianka on October 3, 2023 at 3:04 pm

Hi, I love the MM and am already drinking celery juice every morning (and have been for over 6months now) and I want to start the HMDS but I’m strictly low histamine. Bananas, papaya, mango and citrus are all high histamine. do you have any alternatives?

      • Sharon Selby on October 4, 2023 at 9:48 am

Wow Bianka thats amazing!! Well done as its a huge effort. For the HMDS I would just adapt the fruit you use with low histamine options. If you can add the dulse, barley grass juice powder, blueberries etc that will be great. If you have a histamine issue have you removed dairy and gluten from the diet? As these inflammatory foods make you more sensitive. Are you a member of the Allergy Free Club? As we have a whole video on histamines available to watch that will be really helpful for you. Sharon xx

    • Sharon Selby on October 4, 2023 at 9:49 am

Yes do whatever you can. A little is better than nothing. And yes its a bit pricey to make. But since investing in my diet Ive saved an absolute heap avoiding doctor appointments. xx
